How do you grow bamboo in containers and pots? |

While some species do much better than others in pots, most bamboo (even very big timber species) can be grown in large planters with the correct soil media mix provided sufficient water, space, light, and nutrients are available. Alaska Fish Fertilizer (5-1-1) is an excellent source of nitrogen and nutrients. Bamboo needs regular irrigation during dry periods and good soil drainage is essential. Constantly saturated, soggy soil will kill most potted plants, including bamboo. It is essential to use a potting soil mix with coarse bark, sand, and/or perlite to ensure good drainage. Bamboo tends to grow somewhat smaller in pots unless large containers are used. In winter place potted bamboo in sheltered locations away from desiccating winds, remove saucers making sure the potting soil drains well, and ensure pots don’t freeze (bury smaller pots in dry soil or surround them with mulch). Remember that some winter watering may be required, but always ensure adequate drainage. Most bamboo species grow quickly, producing large root systems, so use larger pots and containers. |
