Dig a hole twice as large as the pot containing the bamboo. If the excavated soil is poor, mix it 50/50 with decomposed manure, mulch or peat.
Be very careful to plant the bamboo at the same depth as it was in the pot, no deeper or shallower.
Replace the soil mix around the bamboo root ball and firm it in well. If your soil tends to hold excessive moisture during the winter consider making a planting mound elevated about six inches. Water thoroughly and deeply and then wait a few days before watering again.
Don’t keep the soil constantly soggy and don’t let it (or the bamboo) dry out – try to achieve a wet/dry watering cycle.
You may want to make a two or three inch watering berm (a low circular earth dam) around your new bamboo to focus and conserve the irrigation water during the summer, but remember to remove it for the winter. In our climate you can plant most bamboo in any season but always ensure good irrigation for summer planting and good drainage in the winter.
